About Us

At Renwick preschool we strive to provide every child under our care with the tools they need to reach their full potential. We provide a happy environment where children can develop and grow. Our families are an integral part of our centre which builds on children’s needs, strengths, culture and interests to support skills required for lifelong learners.

Te Whāriki

The centre provides a balanced programme following the New Zealand Early Childhood Curriculum - Te Whāriki. The programme is designed to encourage children to become independent learners by participating in a wide variety of interactive learning experiences that have come from the children’s own interests, staff and parent specialities, or community awareness days.

Infants and Toddlers / Tamariki Me Ngā Kōhungahunga

Renwick Preschool offers specialised programming and planning for infants and toddlers. The under 2's children have their own room in the preschool where they are provided with a variety of different learning opportunitites which are based on the children's interests and empowers them to learn and to grow.

Our multi-age setting encourages the infants and toddlers to grow and develop at their own pace, to look up to and observe the older children, and creates a family-like environment where all children care for each other and learn together.

Letterland

Renwick preschool assists child development by working closely with each child in developing language and literacy. Recognising the alphabet and listening to the correct sounds of letters, sustaining attentive listening and responding to what they have heard, is done through the use of the Letterland programme. Letterland uses a variety of fun activities which includes stories, repetition and participation.

Transition to school becomes easier when children can recognise and are familiar with letters
and their names, so we ensure that Letterland is included in our ready for school programme.

“When the brain is ready you can’t stop a child from reading” - Daniel Greensburg

Transition to School

At Renwick Preschool we have adapted a 'transition to school' program which helps prepare the 4 year old children for their next educational journey. We do this by providing a curriculum for the children, based on their own interests, which incorporates maths, writing, reading, and science into their daily learning opportunities. The children engage in cross-curricular activities, where we incorporate maths and language/literacy into all of the children's play through discussion with teachers or materials.

We work closely with local schools, bringing children to assembly's and special school days (i.e. pet day, athletics day) which gives them the opportunity to become familiar with the school environment and recognise teachers and peers.

Community Involvement

Renwick Preschool has a strong belief in being involved in our community. We often visit places in our community such as the supermarket and local parks. We often have special businesses or members of the community come in to visit the children and share their knowledge and experiences with them. Renwick Preschool supports coming together as a community and have done this through being involved in events such as the Taiopenga Community Cultural Day.

We invite members of the community to contact us if they are interested in sharing a skill, hobby, or have a place to visit that the children can be involved in.

Parent/Whānau Participation:

Parents are encouraged to participate in the program by sharing special skills for example cooking, music, physical education and trips and also by collecting items that can be used in the centre for art and collage. We welcome your involvement and also enjoy your ideas, special talents or support in activities.

Social Competencies:

At Renwick preschool we believe that children have the right to learn and play in a friendly, safe and supportive environment. Children experience a range of feelings and our teaching team will help your child in learning to express those feelings appropriately.

OSCAR Program

Before/After School & Holiday - Care and Recreation
We also operate a Ministry of Social Development approved Oscar program for older school children. Our program caters to children from 5-14 years old, and runs in the morning, after school, and during school holidays. Renwick Oscar provides a school collection service from Renwick School, and the program is held in the Community Hall in Renwick. Renwick Oscar provides a variety of different activities and opportunities for children. Tamariki are provided with opportunities to engage in arts and crafts, science, baking, and physical activities throughout their time at the program.A highlight at the program is that all children attending learn and use New Zealand Sign Language with their peers.

Renwick Oscar also operates during school holidays and teacher only days, giving children opportunities to go on trips and have a full day of fun!
